According to the CDC, one in three children born in the year 2000 is on a path to develop obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Unless we alter this trajectory, America will suffer a healthcare crisis far greater than the one we face today. But another trend is also afoot. A generation of young adults is coming of age with a yearning to reconnect to the land and a desire to serve their country. A national School Garden Corps promises to bring these two groups together.
Through expansion of existing Americorps-funded farm-to-school efforts and the creation of a national Americorps program for school gardens, the Corps will green schoolyards, improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and inspire young people to eat well. To advance this program, we seek support for a national planning summit and sign-on of partners and allies.
