Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas

Dr. Eduardo Sanchez is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Prior to his current activities, Eduardo was Director of the Institute for Health Policy at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Eduardo served as the Texas Commissioner of Health from 2001 to 2006, initially as Commissioner of the Texas Department of Health (TDH) from November 2001 through August 2004 and then as Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) from September 2004 to October 2006. Throughout his state agency head tenure, Eduardo worked closely with Susan Combs, then-Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, to address childhood obesity in Texas.

In 2005, the American Academy of Family Physicians presented Eduardo with the 2005 Public Health Award for his contributions to public health in Texas and beyond. In addition, he has been recognized by the Texas Association for School Nutrition and the Texas School Health Association for his efforts to improve the health of Texas children.
